The handling of horses comes naturally to some. Wild eyes,
flaring nostrils and swivelling ears soon ease into calm
under a deft touch and soothing words.
My mother's brother, uncle Tom, was a
great man
with horses and could be found at all the big
horse fairs held around the country. There was
a saying among horse dealers that if you wanted
to get the best deals at a fair you had to arrive
early - 'be sure to have had your breakfast the
night before!' they used to say.
It was after one successful visit to
the big fair in
Spancill Hill that uncle Tom arrived home, slightly
the worse for wear, supported by a stick the likes
of such we had never seen before which he
declared as his Munster
Market stick - 'all the
big shots in Ennis
have one' he exclaimed.
