What makes a man like me make something as useful as a walking stick?

I first started making walking sticks and canes as a young fella. Well,
I didn't make them, nature did.  My father had come
home from England with a limp that never left him.

He'd had a bad fall while away picking potatoes in

Lincolnshire.  I cut a good straight piece of blackthorn and fashioned a kind of handle.  It put a smile on his face and I'll never forget it.  I went to work in England that
summer and never thought about
sticks again for nearly 40 years.

When I came home to Ireland
the blackthorn ditches had
been torn out, but superstition
had protected the old hazel
coppice.  It took me a while to realise what everybody else knows - hazel makes a great walking stick or cane and buffalo horn a comfortable handle.  I hope you enjoy the work of an Irish Stick Maker.
