The Connacht: US$99
The demand for crook makers was once so much part of the Irish
agricultural scene that every piece of lowland hazel coppice would support
as least one stick maker who could be confident in the demand for new
crooks. In those days crooks had to be particularly strong as the
Irish flock was made up of mostly big white sheep the Galway/Roscommon
breed.
Sadly today, those big white sheep have given way to soft continental
types and the crook doesn't have to withstand the rigours it used to.
This may be good for EU shepherds but not much help to us stick-makers.
