Canes and Walking Sticks

A cane or walking stick is along straight stick made of wood or metal. Metal may be more durable but is less aesthetically pleasing. The origination of canes came as a tool for punishment and whipping. At this point canes were mainly made out of bamboo. As time passed on canes became more of a status symbol and less of a tool of punishment. Gentlemen traded in their swords for canes, and even had hidden tubes inside to hid alcohol in. The cane could serve a decorative function or be an aide for walking.

Canes then began to be a necessary too for shepherds or travelers. Canes and walking sticks were useful for traction, defense against thieves, and to keep animals in line. Later on these items began to be a sign of power and authority. Many rulers throughout various cultures have used canes, walking sticks, and staffs. In current society, they are used as an aide to mobility and stability. People chose to handle them in different fashions, varying which side to use it on, and how to use it most reliably.

The necessity of canes and sticks has fluctuated over time and necessity. They are certain to evolve throughout time to become more helpful and to lend more to the entire body and put less stress on the wrist. At some point there is the opportunity for the cane and walking stick to come back into society as a form of fashion.
