Cane
A cane is a long straight stick, more traditionally made of bamboo or Malacca. They have transformed into a variety of metals with various supports. In past history, before it became an aid as a walking sticks, these items were used as an instrument of punishment.
They started out as necessary tools for the shepherd or travelers. A hefty version was helpful in defense against thieves or to keep animals in line. Over time they became a symbol for power and strength, and even later on became a symbol of authority and prestige. Rulers for many cultures in the past and currently have carried some form of staff or walking stick.
In a more current sense, walking sticks became popular in the 17th or 18th century, taking over for the sword in a man's wardrobe. They can be used as a decorative accessory or to function as an aid to walking. In the United States previous presidents have carried them and received them as gifts. George Washington received one from Ben Franklin.
In current history walking sticks are used much more as a mobility or stability aide. It is often used in the opposite hand from the side of the body which is injured. This appears to be counter intuitive, but allows for a more natural shift of weight. However, it is mainly personal preference concerning which hand you hold it in.
